No one wants terrorist murderers treated with kid gloves. But what about 'suspected' terrorists?
The Bush Administration is trying to dodge a bullet regarding holding an American citizen without pressing charges for 3 years. I'm still wondering where is the 'conservative' in compassionate conservatism?
Last I checked the political use of the word 'conservative' had something to do with holding fast to fixed political values. In the case of one Jose Padilla, and who knows how many more, there was no holding fast by the Bush Administration — and the Congress which has stood by and done nothing — to anything but radical change and radical abandonment of our most precious rights. If this is how we will wage the war on terror, the terrorists have won.
Thus, the question is not whether or not Jose Padilla conspired against America (though that question deserves an answer), but whether or not Jose Padilla and anyone who stands accused will only be arrested, charged, tried, and convicted according to the rules of law?
That the rule of law went out the window on this one is a warning to every Republican to beware of their own 'conservative' party, to beware of blind partisanship, to beware of our own lack of vigilance.
