Southwestern Oklahoma State University recently prohibited its employees from using the word "Christmas" in emails and voicemails - meaning no employee is allowed to wish anyone a "Merry Christmas" -
and the school's Director of Human Resources actually visited various campus departments and ordered that the words "Christ" and "Christmas" be covered up in decorations.
The IT department was ordered to change the introduction page of the university's data base to remove a statement that said: "Have a very Happy Holiday . Merry Christmas . Happy New Year."
If you'd like to politely protest this latest expression of the Secular Inquisition, you may call the university's president John Hays at (580) 774-3766 or email him at president@swosu.edu and request that he reverse the ban on "Christmas." (Note: you will probably be told erroneously that there is nothing to the story; leave your message anyway.)
Liberty Counsel: Southwestern Oklahoma State University Bans The Word "Christmas"
Liberty Letters response to President Hays
Dear President Hays:
I know, at least I'm almost sure, that of all places where freedom of religion, speech, and the press ought to be protected under the first amendment charge that "Congress (and I would hope every other law-making or rule making body is included under the spirit of this clause) shall make NO LAW … prohibiting the free exercise thereof" that you would see the wisdom in not proscribing the free religious speech of your employees.
I urge you to reconsider your black listing of permissible speech - anything secular apparently - but nothing religious, you know, nothing that really defines who a person is and how he feels about life, his neighbor, and the holiday in question - and which instead leaves but a void to be filled and thus a prejudice in favor of, every other philosophy on life … some of them not so good.
Bah Humbug to your policy! And instead, Merry Christmas to you and your fellow collegians!
